Dual 1-Ohm vs. Dual 2-Ohm Subwoofer Wiring
Dual 1-ohm and dual 2-ohm describe the resistance of each voice coil on a dual-voice-coil subwoofer. The correct choice depends on the number of subwoofers and the final load your amplifier can safely support.
One dual 1-ohm subwoofer
Wire the two 1-ohm coils in parallel for a nominal 0.5-ohm load, or in series for a nominal 2-ohm load. Use the 0.5-ohm option only if the amplifier is explicitly rated for that load and the electrical system can support it.
One dual 2-ohm subwoofer
Wire the two 2-ohm coils in parallel for a nominal 1-ohm load, or in series for a nominal 4-ohm load. This makes a dual 2-ohm model a common choice for a single-subwoofer system targeting a 1-ohm amplifier load.
Two dual 1-ohm subwoofers
A common series-parallel arrangement produces a nominal 1-ohm final load. Wiring every coil in parallel produces a nominal 0.25-ohm load, which is below the safe rating of many amplifiers and should never be assumed acceptable.
Two dual 2-ohm subwoofers
Wiring all four coils in parallel produces a nominal 0.5-ohm final load. A series-parallel arrangement can produce a nominal 2-ohm final load. Confirm the complete diagram before connecting power.

- One subwoofer on a 1-ohm-stable amplifier: dual 2-ohm is commonly used.
- One subwoofer on a 0.5-ohm-stable amplifier: dual 1-ohm can provide that nominal load.

Important wiring rules
Nominal impedance is not constant while music plays. Actual impedance changes with frequency, enclosure and driver behavior. An amplifier also needs adequate voltage, current, cooling, cable, fusing and grounding. Never use a wiring diagram to justify operating below the amplifier manufacturer's published minimum.
Subwoofer impedance FAQ
Does lower impedance automatically mean more output?
No. A lower nominal load can allow an amplifier to produce more power, but it also increases electrical and thermal demand. Safe, clean power is more useful than an unstable setup.
Can the two coils be wired differently?
Both coils should be used and should receive the same signal. Do not run only one coil unless the driver manufacturer specifically approves that application.
What should I choose if I am unsure?
